Alphabet Adventures: Letter K

Week 11 brought us through the letter K

You can find the original post explaining what this journey is by clicking the link below!

Alphabet Adventures

For this week we focused on: keys, kites and kinetic sand

Logan is now 19 months old and these are all activities developmentally appropriate for his age and abilities. It is important to take into account the age/abilities of your kiddos and adjust as necessary.

Most of the crafts done along this adventure are what we call “process art”. That means it is all about the actual process of doing the project instead of the outcome.

At this age, children are not usually able to produce beautifully thought out projects solo. However, they can do many things within the projects themself solo! Painting, coloring, gluing, molding, ripping, dotting etc etc are all things they can do!

Children at this age learn through exploration!

During Alphabet Adventures, every week needs to include these things:

1. Craft

2. Food

3. Outing

4. Books/Activites

5. Sensory activity

I also decided that every week we are going to do a handprint craft that we will eventually turn into an “ABC” book!

Here is our tenth page!

Craft

For our crafts this week we made a kite, and key collage.

Some weeks Logan is more into “doing” than “making” and that’s ok! The weather was absolutely beautiful this week and Dad was home for 4 days straight so we spent most of our time outside! Logan had very little interest in crafts this week. It’s important to adjust as necessary! It would not have turned out well if I dragged a toddler inside to do a craft just for the sake of taking a picture and posting it here 😉

Painted Kite

Paper, paint sticks, sticks and streamers! I drew a rough outline of a kite on paper and let Logan go to town with the paint sticks. I cut it out, had Logan collect some sticks to glue in the center (sticking with the theme of glue practice 😉) and then had him glue on streamers for the tail!

Key Collage

Logan is SO into glue right now, so I am trying to give him activities to practice with that! I have also been testing his ability to follow directions when it comes to certain crafts. We are still working on “staying inside the shape” and he did really well gluing the pieces of foil inside the key!

Food

The food this week was kale and pepper egg bites!

Logan’s rating- 1/10. I only gave him one because he at least tried it. Too many veggies in it he said 😂 immediately said “no” and pushed it away from him

Outing

Since the last couple outings were free, we decided to pay to go somewhere fun! We went to a kids indoor playground!

I’m not gonna lie, these places make me a little nervous- cleanliness wise. As well as possibly being overcrowded with unruly children.

However, we went right at opening and there were not that many children in there. It was also very clean!

I thought Logan was going to like the indoor jungle gym more than that imaginative playroom, however, I feel like he spent more time in this room!

He barbecued us some hotdogs and gave farm animals a bath. His imaginative play was so amazing to watch! it’s kind of bittersweet that we are at this stage.

Activites

“Kangaroo Pouch”

I taught Logan how to do, what I like to call, a “kangaroo pouch” this week and I didn’t even make the connection that it was “K” week until James brought it up!

Logan is always out collecting treasures and the other day we couldn’t find a bucket to carry them in. I taught him hold to fold up the bottom of his shirt to create a pouch to put all his treasures in!

Kick”

This is one of my favorite games Logan enjoys playing right now! He will see a ball and say, “kick!” And then he runs up to it and kicks it. But he has a sweet little way of saying it that makes James and I smile.

Kelsey & her Kids

We had our friends come over for a play date, and her daughter thoughtfully reminded me that her mom’s name is Kelsey and it’s K week!

I laughed because I didn’t even think about that, but it counts!

Random Acts of Kindness

I don’t have a picture for this one because I’m a big believer that random act of kindness should be done anonymously and often.

I used to think that these acts need to cost money such as buying coffee for the person behind you in line. However, the truth is sometimes they cost no money at all!

I try to make these acts a part of my everyday life and it’s something I definitely want to instill in Logan. Kindness is free.

Flying a Kite

If you haven’t flown a kite with your kiddos, please try it. It’s one of the best activities and Logan always giggles so loud.

Full disclosure- this was an old picture (hence the green fields) I didn’t take a picture this week when we did it because I was too in the moment ❤️

Sensory Activity

K is for kinetic sand and keys

Lately I have been designing our sensory table around Logan’s interest of “loose parts”. So to stick with that, we went with kinetic sand and keys! There were close to 30 keys in here and he loved them!

He played with them in so many different ways, which is usually the story with any loose part. I’ve mentioned before what a fan we are of “loose parts” because they are open ended toys.
