playdates & popsicles, two of my son’s favorite things….

….and he is my favorite thing. This site is dedicated to him and all of our adventures as we learn and grow together. Filled with the little moments that become big memories

Alphabet Adventures: Letter F

We’re all feeling better this week, so we enthusiastically jumped into “F” week!

Started the week with a special surprise! 🥲

If you look through Logan’s books and activities, most of them are farm themed! He can tell you what most animals on a farm say (at least the main ones). It’s also probably going to be the theme of his second birthday😉

So this theme was easy for us to put together and it got to utilize some of Logan’s favorite toys!

If you are just now joining us on our “Alphabet Adventure”, you can read all about what it is in the post below—>

Alphabet Adventures

For this week we focused on: farm, flowers and food

During Alphabet Adventures, every week needs to include these things:

1. Craft

2. Food

3. Outing

4. Books/Activites

5. Sensory activity

I also decided that every week we are going to do a handprint craft that we will eventually turn into an “ABC” book!

Here is our sixth page!

Logan loves fish! He can do the sign for fish and it’s because of songs we sing that involve them. So I knew he would enjoy adding this picture to his book

Craft

For our crafts this week we did foil finger painting, flower stepping stone, and a foil stamped fire.

Foil Finger-painting

One of the ultimate process art for toddlers- painting on foil! Yes, we started with paintbrushes, but Logan noticed quickly how different it felt to paint on foil versus paint on paper. One of the biggest benefits of painting on foil is the ability for them to color mix more seamlessly. Logan noted that right from the start and wanted to do it with his hands. So, “f” for finger painting it is!

If you want to take this a step further, another fun thing to do is take a piece of white paper and gently press it on top of the foil with all the paint mixed on it. Lift it off, and a unique print will be on the paper!

Flower Stepping Stone

Wanted to make something for grandma and Grandpa, so we picked a flower shaped stepping stone! we are going to see them next week during “g” week and Logan is going to gift it to him. However, Grandma reads this…… so, hi mom! Act surprised 😉

Logan picked out the colors himself, and did a really good job painting the whole thing. I think he worked on it more because I told him it was for grandma and grandpa. Now, when he walks by it, he points to it and says, “pa!” Because he knows it’s going to them!

Foil Stamped Fire

I didn’t think Logan was going to be into this one very much, because it’s another sort of process process art, but he loved it!

I think it turned out really cute and I can’t decide if I want to laminate it and put it in the window with his sun, or what to do with it. I’ll find something though!

Food

The food of the week was a frittata! I was, and still am, confused on how a frittata is different than a breakfast casserole….. I think it’s just the amount of milk that makes a different? This was a lot more creamier than a normal breakfast casserole. However, I’m not complaining. We are big breakfast people in this family. Now that our chickens are laying, you can find us eating eggs every morning.

James and I usually eat breakfast before Logan is awake, but I made this later in the morning so we all got to eat breakfast together!

Logan’s rating-9/10 Ate his whole serving and had seconds. “Mmmmm bacon!”

Outing

F week was pretty easy to find outings for! The hard part was limiting it to just a couple activities. Some other activities on our list that we considered- farmers market, froyo, farm, a town near us that starts with F and has a lake, food truck, fruit picking…… so many!

Ultimately we decided on two outings since James had two days off.

The first was to our local FLOWER FARM for some breakfast, coffee and a stroll.

Then we went to our local FISH HATCHERY! Even though the salmon were not running, they had Rainbow Trout in their holding tanks! We got to feed them for free and Logan loved watching them splash around trying to get some food.

I have fond memories of my dad taking me to our local fish hatchery when I was younger so this was pretty nostalgic for me.

Books/Activites

A lot of repeats in this weeks rotation which is great! I have found that if I put a specific toy away for a week or two, when I bring it back out Logan will play with it like it’s brand new again!

Flower Arranging

This activity cost 3$! Like I’ve said before, the dollar tree is amazing for this kind of stuff. I cut the bushel of flowers into single stemmed flowers and gave Logan a piece of floral design foam. I showed him how to push the flowers in once and he took it from there. He loved putting all the flowers in! Once they were all in, he removed all the flowers from the foam block and tried to reinsert them into the holes they had made. A little fine motor skill work!

The only downside was because this was a cheap foam black it started peeling and shedding off as he played with it. I had to watch closely to ensure he did not eat/breathe in any of the pieces. I ended up taking it away before he wanted.

I switched it for a little bottle for Logan to put the flowers in, which wasn’t as interesting for him but was good enough switch to put a pause on a potential meltdown.

Jumping Frogs

Another dollar tree find, these frogs came in a set of 4. They are squirty bath toys, but we will not use them as such. (Squirty bath toys harbor mold). Logan actually came up with the idea to bring them on the jump house because frogs, in his words, “jump, jump, jump!”

He had so much fun with these frogs because the served as loose parts. They are multipurpose and can be used for a variety of things. They are currently outside riding shotgun in his push car.

Feeding our Farm Friends

We love our neighbor farm friends—goats, horses and more chickens! And they’re all so friendly. The goats love animal crackers, and so does Logan, so they usually end up sharing a snack.

Books

Picked up another one of “Mrs. Peanuckle’s” books to add to our collection

We also have many of these “block” books and they are so cool! Highly recommend!

Sensory Activity

sensory bins are my absolute favorite

Theme- F is for farm and funnels

Sometimes less is more. With this sensory bin, we wanted to focus on funnels and his ever so favorite scooping and pouring.

Also the animals are all Schleich brand. Significantly more expensive than some other animals you can buy but SO worth it. They have already withstood a lot of “toddler playtime”, if you know what I mean… and have held up so well! These animals will be utilized throughout the years in many ways so I know they are worth the investment.
